Insurance Industry and Coverage in Times of War

Insurance Industry and Coverage in Times of War

(CodeList) - For decades, the insurance industry stopped offering this type of instrument, however, in the face of an armed conflict, it is necessary to reflect on the losses that arise. In the first place, the deaths they cause; the mobilization of populations that generate the need to attend to refugees who cannot wait.

In other branches, there are specialized aircraft insurance, where the hull is insured, which, although they will always have an exclusion of war risks, sometimes it is possible to extend an endorsement for its protection. An example of this was the destruction of the largest aircraft in the world, the Antonov AN-225 at the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. This situation has not only represented a loss for the aeronautical sector, but has also become a symbol for Ukraine, since that this plane was known as Mriya, “Dream” in Ukrainian. Surely its reconstruction will be expensive and time-consuming if it ever happens.

In the difficult context there is also coverage for Cultural Heritage, made up of monuments, historic buildings, museums and the works of art that are preserved in them. To measure the case, I would like to recommend three films that address this issue: Operation Monument (Monuments Mens) with George Clooney; The Golden Lady (Woman in Gold) with Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds and, finally, Hitler vs Picasso, a documentary about the looting of art in the museums of occupied territories. Art and culture are also likely to be part of the battlefield.

Insurance companies are always at a crossroads on what to do when an armed conflict breaks out, these types of events are potentially destructive not only for a country, but for all humanity.
