Officials identify cause of death for Getty oil heir found dead in San Antonio

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the cause of death for an oil heir found dead in San Antonio.

John Gilbert Getty, 52, the grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, died on Nov. 20.

The cause was cardiomyopathy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, complicated by fentanyl toxicity, officials said Wednesday. The manner of death was an accident.

Getty was found at 136 E. Grayson Street, the address of Hotel Emma, a luxury hotel within the Pearl district.

"John was a talented musician who loved rock and roll," a representative for the family said in November. "He will be deeply missed."

John's daughter, Ivy, shared a tribute to her father on Instagram, writing, "My father was awesome-coolest man to ever land on this planet and I will forever be the proudest daughter." She added that San Antonio was one of his favorite American cities.

John was predeceased by his mother, Ann, and brother, Andrew.

Ann, a publisher and arts patron, died in September after suffering a heart attack. Andrew, 47, was found dead in 2015 at his Los Angeles home.

J. Paul Getty, John's grandfather, was a wildcatter who built an empire in the United States and struck an oil deal with Saudi Arabia in the 1960s. His son Gordon, John's father, sold Getty Oil to Texaco for $10 billion in 1984.

In 2015, Forbes magazine estimated the Getty family fortune at $5.4 billion.
