(Times News Express) - BRITNEY Spears’ father asked a judge to give him access to his daughter’s estate again just a month after being removed as the conservator, in a move branded “nonsense” by a legal expert.
Jamie Spears was terminated as conservator of Britney’s estate in September after a highly publicized hearing in front of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny.
Jamie Spears, father of singer Britney Spears, asked the court for access to his daughter’s estate plan even though he was terminated as conservator of her estate earlier this year.
Britney was freed from the conservatorship that her father held since 2008.
Jamie had held control over Britney’s fortune – valued at $70 million by Celebrity Networth – since 2008, and reportedly made at least $5 million as conservator, according to Forbes.
But during a court appearance earlier this month, Jamie’s lawyer requested access to Britney’s estate plan, Variety reported.
An estate plan could include details of Britney’s assets and personal property, and what she plans to do with them.
The motion was objected to by the lawyer for John Zabel, the temporary court-appointed conservator who’s helping Britney manage her finances until mid-January.
While an official ruling hasn’t been made yet, Law Professor Bridget Crawford told The Sun in an exclusive interview that the request “should be denied immediately.”
Crawford, who teaches at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University in New York and specializes in estate, trusts and taxes, said she’s never seen that before.
“It’s a continued example of Jamie meddling with his daughter’s affairs,” Crawford said. “He has no right to know how his daughter is using her money. It should be dismissed immediately. It’s outrageous.
“It becomes public only at her unlikely death, and even then, there are lots of ways to keep depositions private,” Crawford said.
Jamie’s lawyer didn’t return a request for comment.
Britney’s case and emotional, hours-long testimony shined the spotlight on conservatorships and sparked the fan-fueled #FreeBritney movement.
After the conservatorship was officially over, her lawyer Mathew Rosengart exclusively told The Sun: “If Britney wants, we will absolutely continue pursuing active investigations into certain claims against Mr. Spears.
“It’s telling he still will not back down. I look forward to Mr. Spears’ deposition and pursuing that further.”
He continued: “Britney absolutely knows that without her fans, this day would not be here.
“Britney’s impact has showcased all around the world and because of her, people in conservatorships from New York to California who are abused by conservators like Jamie Spears will have a spotlight shined down on them.
“She credits her fans for her freedom and is eternally grateful.”
The lawyer concluded: “Today was an emotional day that was a long time coming and with all due respect, if you would excuse me I now have a very important and exciting phone call to make to my client.”
Britney Spears says family ‘hurt her deeply’ and ‘still wants justice’ despite conservatorship victory.
