Lloyd Blankfein: Russians might back Bernie Sanders, since he would ‘screw up’ U.S. more than Donald Trump

The former chief executive of Goldman Sachs isn’t a fan of Bernie Sanders.

In a late-night tweet sent as Sanders captured the New Hampshire primary, Lloyd Blankfein said the senator would do a better job of hurting the U.S. than President Donald Trump, and that Russians would have to “reconsider who to work for.”

"If Dems go on to nominate Sanders, the Russians will have to reconsider who to work for to best screw up the US. Sanders is just as polarizing as Trump AND he’ll ruin our economy and doesn’t care about our military. If I’m Russian, I go with Sanders this time around," tweeted Blenkfein.

Russia in 2016 did back the Sanders campaign, according to the Mueller report, though its activities in support of Trump were more extensive. According to the Mueller report, one internal Russian document said—“main idea: use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump—we support them.)” One social-media account run by Russia posted pro-Sanders and anti-Clinton material. The Mueller investigation didn’t establish that members of the Trump or Sanders campaigns conspired with Russia.

Sanders in a 2012 speech on the Senate floor criticized Blankfein for supporting a reduction in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, calling him the “face of class warfare.” Blankfein stepped down as CEO of Goldman in 2018.
